Anchor text is the visible, clickable text of a hyperlink, which gives users and search engines context about the linked page.

Anchor text is the clickable text of a link — the words usually shown underlined or in a different color. Search engines use it as a strong hint about the topic of the destination page, which is why descriptive anchors ("free BMI calculator") beat generic ones ("click here").

For backlinks, a natural mix of anchor types is healthiest: branded anchors, descriptive phrases, bare URLs and occasional exact keywords. Over-optimized anchor profiles where every link uses the same money keyword are a classic spam signal.
