What Is Alt Text?
Alt text is a written description of an image in HTML that screen readers announce and search engines use to understand the image.
Alt text (alternative text) is an HTML attribute that describes an image in words. Screen readers speak it aloud to visually impaired users, browsers display it if an image fails to load, and search engines rely on it to understand image content for image search and page relevance.
Good alt text is specific and concise — "golden retriever puppy sleeping in a basket" rather than "dog" or a keyword list. Decorative images that add no information should carry an empty alt attribute so assistive technology skips them.
