What Is Body Fat Percentage?

Body fat percentage is the share of your total weight that is fat tissue — a more direct measure of body composition than BMI.

Body fat percentage divides fat mass by total body weight. Healthy ranges are roughly 10–20% for adult men and 18–28% for adult women, with athletes often lower and essential fat floors around 3% (men) and 12% (women).

Unlike BMI, body fat percentage distinguishes a muscular 90 kg from a sedentary 90 kg. Accurate measurement requires DEXA scans or similar; home methods like smart scales and tape-measure formulas are best used for tracking trends rather than absolute numbers.
