What Is BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)?

BMR is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest to maintain vital functions like breathing and circulation.

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the energy your body uses just to stay alive — powering the brain, heart, lungs and cell maintenance while at complete rest. It typically accounts for 60–70% of total daily calorie burn.

BMR is estimated from sex, age, height and weight, most accurately with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. A 30-year-old man of average size has a BMR around 1,700–1,800 calories; a woman of average size around 1,400. Muscle mass raises BMR, which is one reason strength training aids long-term weight management.
